Dry vs Dehydrated Skin

Dry vs Dehydrated Skin

Dry and dehydrated skin can look very similar, which is why the two are so easily confused. However, the causes and mechanisms behind them are different, and they require different approaches to skincare.

Dry skin does not produce enough lipids, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Dryness is usually linked to genetics or age-related changes. Dehydration, on the other hand, is often temporary and may occur after spending long periods in air-conditioned environments, during the heating season, after flying, following sun exposure or stress, or as a result of using overly harsh cleansers.

Interestingly, any skin type can become dehydrated — dry, normal, combination and even oily skin.

When Your Skin Is Thirsty

Modern research shows that skin health depends greatly on the condition of its protective barrier — the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. Its role is to help retain water and protect the skin from external factors.

When the skin barrier is compromised, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases, leading to typical signs of dehydration such as:

  • a feeling of tightness after cleansing;
  • a dull-looking complexion;
  • increased sensitivity;
  • fine surface lines;
  • a feeling of dryness despite the skin becoming shiny during the day;
  • discomfort around the cheeks and eye area.

It is also quite common for dehydrated skin to appear oily in the T-zone while still lacking sufficient moisture.

Attract Moisture and Reduce Water Loss

Water is retained in the skin through two key mechanisms. Humectants attract and bind water molecules, while a healthy epidermal barrier helps prevent excessive evaporation.

Addressing only one of these mechanisms may not deliver the best results. That is why modern skincare for dehydrated skin generally focuses on three key steps:

  1. Gentle cleansing.
  2. Hydration.
  3. Supporting the skin’s natural barrier function.

Here is how you can build this routine using our natural skincare products.

Cleansing Should Be Gentle

The sulphate-free formula ofĀ Spiruskin Hyaluron Cleansing GelĀ uses mild surfactants to cleanse the skin without being overly harsh on its protective barrier.

This soft, gentle cleansing gel helps care for demanding skin from the very first step of the routine, providing additional hydration and nourishment as it cleanses. Natural hyaluronic acid — combining high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid — works alongside spirulina extract and the innovative anti-wrinkle active ArgirelineĀ® (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8) to help support a fresher, more radiant-looking complexion.

Pineapple fruit extract has keratolytic, refreshing and moisturising properties. Together, these ingredients help reduce the feeling of dryness after cleansing.

When skin is dehydrated, it is particularly important to avoid stripping away too much of its natural oils. This is why gentle cleansers are usually the preferred option. For many people, simply replacing an overly harsh cleanser with a milder formula can make a noticeable difference to how comfortable the skin feels.

A Lightweight Cream with a Dual Action

The main moisturising step in this routine isĀ 4Elements for Life 24H Cream. Its formula combines several types of moisturising ingredients, including:

  • aloe vera;
  • sodium hyaluronate;
  • glycerin.

These ingredients act as humectants, helping to attract and retain water in the upper layers of the skin and support healthy hydration levels.

To help maintain the skin barrier, the formula also contains almond oil, jojoba oil, pomegranate seed oil and other lipid-rich ingredients. These create a light protective layer on the surface of the skin, helping to reduce moisture loss and improve the feeling of comfort.

And Finally, the Eye Area

The skin around the eyes is considerably thinner than the skin on many other areas of the face, which means it can show signs of dehydration more quickly.

4 Elements for Life Eye Contour SerumĀ combines aloe vera, high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and glycerin with almond oil, pomegranate seed oil, grape seed oil and prickly pear seed oil. Shea butter provides an additional layer of nourishment and protection.

This combination is particularly helpful for reducing the feeling of dryness and keeping the delicate eye area feeling more comfortable — especially during the heating season, while travelling, or after spending long hours in front of a computer screen.
